Prediction markets and sportsbooks price outcomes differently because they operate under distinct incentive structures. Sportsbooks set odds to balance liability and extract a margin, while prediction markets aggregate trader beliefs through continuous price discovery. This market's odds on Polymarket and Kalshi reflect what thousands of independent traders believe will happen, often incorporating information faster than traditional sportsbooks adjust. Comparing the two can reveal value: if prediction market odds diverge significantly from sportsbook lines, it may signal an edge or highlight where one venue has stale pricing.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different odds on this market for several reasons. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. User bases differ in size, sophistication, and geographic composition, leading to distinct trading patterns and risk appetites. Liquidity varies between venues, so large trades move prices differently on each platform. Fee structures and order-book depth also influence how quickly prices converge. Additionally, platform-specific rules around trading hours or position limits may cause temporary pricing gaps. Savvy traders exploit these spreads by arbitraging between the two venues.
