Prediction markets and traditional sportsbooks price outcomes using different mechanisms. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and manage risk, often incorporating a margin. Prediction markets, by contrast, derive prices from continuous trading among participants with real money at stake, creating a crowdsourced probability estimate. This market-driven approach can sometimes reveal edges relative to sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges. However, sportsbooks benefit from professional oddsmakers and sharp action, so neither venue is uniformly more accurate. Comparing both sources helps traders calibrate their edge on this matchup.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts different trader demographics, liquidity pools, and risk tolerances, leading to pricing variation even on the same underlying event. Polymarket and Kalshi may also have distinct fee structures, user interfaces, and settlement rules that influence how participants value outcomes. Market depth and trading volume on each venue affect price discovery; thinner liquidity can amplify temporary mispricings. Additionally, timing lags in information flow or differences in how each platform's community interprets available data can create short-term divergences. Arbitrage-minded traders often exploit these gaps, gradually pushing prices toward alignment.
