Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines to balance their risk, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take a position in this market, driving the price to reflect their collective view. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of information becomes public, as this market can incorporate information faster than traditional sources.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to 1; a share priced at 0.60 suggests a 60% probability.
