Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by user predictions on Polymarket, can sometimes diverge from sportsbook lines as new information emerges or as traders identify perceived mispricings. It's common to see differences, particularly in events where public opinion strongly deviates from expert consensus, or where specialized knowledge is valuable.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares is determined by supply and demand, and traders aim to profit by correctly predicting the outcome. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities as the event approaches, providing a real-time assessment of expectations.
