Prediction markets and traditional sportsbooks price events differently because they operate under distinct mechanisms. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and lock in profit margins, while prediction markets aggregate trader beliefs through continuous price discovery. This market reflects what thousands of participants collectively believe will happen, often incorporating real-time information faster than sportsbooks adjust their lines. Comparing this market's implied probability to major sportsbook odds can reveal where consensus diverges and highlight potential value opportunities for informed bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader orders into real-time odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability reflects the balance of buy and sell orders, with prices updating continuously as new trades execute. Traders can enter or exit positions at any time before resolution, and the market's price serves as a live consensus estimate of the match outcome. Deeper liquidity typically narrows spreads and improves pricing accuracy.
