Prediction market odds and traditional sportsbook odds often diverge because they reflect different participant bases and incentive structures. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and lock in profit margins, while prediction markets aggregate trader beliefs through continuous price discovery. This market's odds may lead or lag sportsbook lines depending on information flow and trader sophistication. Comparing the two can reveal where professional consensus and decentralized forecasters disagree on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker pool. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on one outcome, and the ratio of shares in the pool determines the current odds. As traders place orders, the price adjusts in real time to reflect new information and shifting expectations about the match result. Higher trading volume typically narrows spreads and improves price accuracy.
