Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. Discrepancies can arise due to varying information access, biases, or differing interpretations of the players' form. If significant differences exist, arbitrage opportunities may emerge, encouraging traders to exploit the price differences between the two. It is important to note that these odds can shift as new information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and the current volume indicates the level of interest and conviction among traders regarding the match's result.
