Prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi are typically more efficient than traditional sportsbooks because they aggregate real-time trader sentiment without a built-in margin. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and protect profit; prediction markets let supply and demand set prices directly. This often means tighter spreads and faster price movement in response to news. However, prediction markets may have lower liquidity on niche events, which can widen spreads. For major fixtures, both venues usually converge toward similar fair value over time.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts different trader demographics, liquidity pools, and risk appetites, which naturally creates temporary price gaps. Polymarket and Kalshi may also have different fee structures or user bases with varying information access. Market microstructure differences—such as order book depth or trading hours—can cause one venue to react faster to breaking news than the other. These gaps typically narrow as arbitrageurs trade across both platforms, but they create opportunities for alert traders to capture value before consensus realigns.
