Prediction market odds often differ from those found at traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd and potentially incorporating information not yet priced into sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set initial odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, leading to adjustments based on a wider range of factors. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders can profit from discrepancies between the two types of markets. However, it’s important to note that both reflect probabilities of the same underlying event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly updating as new information becomes available. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket.
