Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by trader opinions, potentially leading to odds that more accurately reflect the true probabilities as perceived by a diverse group. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying levels of market participation. Comparing these odds can be a valuable exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more traders believe an outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd.
