Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. As a result, you may find that the probabilities implied by this market diverge from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, analytical approaches, or simply differing opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the competitors. It’s useful to compare both to get a broader perspective.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb. Conversely, if sentiment shifts towards a different result, the price of those shares will decrease. This dynamic pricing system ensures that the market odds constantly adapt to new information and changing opinions.
