Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, being driven by the collective wisdom of traders, can sometimes provide more accurate probabilities, especially as new information emerges. However, sportsbook odds are readily available and represent the views of professional oddsmakers, so comparing them can be insightful. Discrepancies between the two can highlight areas where the market believes there’s an edge to be found, or where public perception differs from expert analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event’s potential results. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand from traders on Polymarket.
