Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Comparing the odds can reveal where the crowd believes there’s value, or where sportsbooks might be over or underestimating a particular outcome. Keep in mind that sportsbooks and this market have different incentives and information sources.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregate assessment of all traders on Polymarket. The market is highly liquid, allowing for relatively easy entry and exit, and the price adjusts rapidly to new information and changing sentiment.
