Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds reveals how the wisdom of the crowd differs from professional oddsmakers. Often, prediction markets can offer more accurate probabilities, especially when information is sparse or subjective. However, sportsbook odds reflect the influence of established betting limits and profit margins. Discrepancies between this market and sportsbook lines might signal opportunities for arbitrage, where traders can profit from price differences. It’s important to note that sportsbooks and prediction markets have different user bases and information sources, leading to potentially varying assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand; if more people believe Hanacek Josef will win, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of expectations.
