Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or initial public perception. While sportsbooks set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to a dynamic and potentially more accurate assessment. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources or varying interpretations of the same data, offering opportunities for arbitrage if significant differences emerge. It's important to compare both to gain a comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the collective intelligence of the crowd. This creates a dynamic pricing system that is constantly updating based on new information and changing sentiment. The current price reflects the aggregated predictions of all traders on the platform.
