Prediction markets and traditional sportsbooks price events differently because they operate under distinct incentive structures. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and lock in profit margins, while prediction markets aggregate trader beliefs through continuous price discovery. This market reflects what thousands of independent traders believe will happen, often incorporating real-time information faster than sportsbooks adjust their lines. Comparing the two can reveal where consensus diverges from bookmaker pricing, though both aim to reflect underlying probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader orders into real-time probability estimates. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Shares representing each outcome trade continuously, and the current price of a share reflects the market's implied odds. As more traders buy or sell a particular outcome, the price adjusts automatically, ensuring the market stays responsive to new information and trader conviction. This mechanism allows you to enter or exit positions at transparent, algorithmically determined prices.
