Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines to balance their risk, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It's common to see prediction markets move independently of sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges or as the event draws closer. Examining both can offer a more comprehensive view of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the aggregated beliefs of all participants, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available. The current price reflects the collective forecast of traders on Polymarket.
