Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, aiming to profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the result. As a result, prediction market odds can sometimes be more efficient, reflecting a purer assessment of probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying levels of market participation. Comparing the two can be a valuable exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregate sentiment of all participants, and changes in volume and trading activity can significantly impact the odds. The current volume traded is $164,591.
