Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome, potentially leading to more efficient pricing. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, information advantages held by prediction market participants, or simply variations in how risk is assessed. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular team, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of them scoring first. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continuously adjust to reflect the latest information and collective intelligence.
