Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess the probability of an outcome. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, particularly as new information emerges and traders update their views. It’s common to see prediction markets reflect the 'wisdom of the crowd' more accurately than fixed-odds sportsbooks, especially closer to the event. Examining both can provide a well-rounded view of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price is determined by supply and demand; if more people believe FC Lugano will score first, the price of those shares will increase, and vice-versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of the traders.
