It’s common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action on both sides, while incorporating a margin for profit. This market, driven by the collective intelligence of traders on Polymarket, reflects what participants believe is the *true* probability of each outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in how each venue assesses the event. Comparing these odds can sometimes reveal opportunities for value betting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the estimated chance of that outcome occurring, and traders adjust their positions based on new information and their own analysis. This dynamic process aims to converge on a probability assessment that represents the wisdom of the crowd.
