Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, reflecting their profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective predictions of traders, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market dynamically adjusts based on the wisdom of the crowd. It's interesting to compare how the implied probabilities differ between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. This creates a dynamic pricing system where the market efficiently aggregates information and reflects the collective judgment of participants. The current price reflects the most up-to-date assessment of the match's potential results.
