Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks may set odds based on statistical models and public perception, while this market aggregates the insights of informed traders who actively assess the probabilities. This can lead to prediction market odds becoming more accurate as the event approaches and more information is incorporated. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly early on, as the market adjusts to new data and differing opinions on the likely outcome of the DEL hockey match.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The higher the demand for shares representing a particular outcome, the higher its price, and therefore, the higher the perceived probability. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades are rewarded.
