Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market is driven purely by the collective predictions of traders. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on statistical models, this market adapts rapidly to new information and changing opinions. It’s common to see discrepancies, as this market represents the wisdom of the crowd rather than a single entity’s assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise. Conversely, if sentiment shifts towards another outcome, its share price will increase while the others decrease. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to reflect the latest information and collective intelligence.
