Comparing prediction market odds to those offered by sportsbooks reveals how collective intelligence differs from traditional oddsmaking. Sportsbooks typically set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market reflects the wisdom of the crowd. If a significant discrepancy exists, it could indicate that prediction market participants possess unique information or have a different assessment of the teams’ capabilities. It's common to see prediction markets move faster than sportsbooks in response to new information, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact score outcomes. The price of each share directly reflects the market’s probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective belief about the likelihood of each result. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The higher the demand for a particular outcome, the higher its share price will climb, and vice versa, creating a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
