Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, being driven by the collective wisdom of traders, aims to reflect the true probabilities as perceived by the crowd. While sportsbooks may be influenced by public betting patterns or promotional considerations, this market relies on individuals directly expressing their beliefs through trading. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments, offering potential arbitrage opportunities for informed participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, reflecting the aggregated predictions of all participants. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continuously adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment.
