Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to remember that prediction market odds are dynamic and change based on trading activity, potentially converging with sportsbook odds as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price fluctuates based on supply and demand; increased buying pressure drives the price up, indicating growing confidence in that outcome, while selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
