Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis and information. If there's a significant discrepancy, it could indicate that the crowd believes the sportsbook has mispriced the outcome, or that new information hasn't yet been fully incorporated into sportsbook lines. It’s a fascinating comparison to consider when evaluating potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more shares are bought for a particular score, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price movements are determined solely by supply and demand from traders on Polymarket, creating a dynamic and responsive assessment of the potential result. It’s a fascinating way to see collective intelligence in action.
