Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to reflect the true probabilities as assessed by traders. This can lead to discrepancies, with this market potentially offering more favorable odds depending on the collective wisdom of the crowd. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, as they benefit from a diverse range of informed opinions. However, sportsbook odds can still be a useful data point for comparison.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to $1, with a price of $0.50 indicating a 50% probability.
