Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own analysis and to balance betting action, while this market is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Often, prediction markets are more accurate than sportsbook odds, especially when there’s significant public interest in an event. However, sportsbook odds can sometimes provide a useful benchmark for comparison, and discrepancies may present opportunities for arbitrage.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability estimate of each player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa.
