Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from sportsbook odds based on public perception and information available to traders. Sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis and algorithms, but this market allows for continuous adjustment as new information emerges and more people weigh in. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information asymmetry or biases present in each system. It's common to see this market and sportsbook odds converge closer to the event date as more data becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The more shares purchased for a particular player, the higher the price rises, indicating increased confidence in their victory in the China Open qualifying match.
