Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a more accurate forecast than traditional sportsbook odds, as they aggregate the wisdom of the crowd. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, potentially introducing biases. This market, however, allows individuals to express their own informed opinions, leading to a potentially more efficient price discovery process. While sportsbooks may initially offer different odds, they often adjust them closer to prediction market prices as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It's a fascinating comparison of different forecasting methods.
On Opinion, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell contracts representing different outcomes. The price of each contract reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Opinion, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding contract will rise. Conversely, if sentiment shifts towards another outcome, the price of that contract will increase while the original decreases. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market constantly reflects the collective intelligence of those trading on Opinion.
