Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the likely winner. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook has mispriced the outcome, the odds here will adjust accordingly. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market's life, as information and opinions evolve. Comparing the two can offer valuable insights into public perception and potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular player, the higher the price will rise, indicating increased confidence in their victory. Conversely, selling shares lowers the price, suggesting decreased confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
