Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' perspective, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows traders to express their own informed opinions, potentially leading to odds that diverge from traditional sportsbooks, especially as new information emerges. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, leading to different probabilities assigned to the same outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event happening. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on their own analysis and information. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
