Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect a more accurate forecast than traditional sportsbook odds, as they aggregate the wisdom of the crowd. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks and prediction markets have different incentives and cater to different audiences. Sportsbooks aim to profit from setting lines, while prediction markets allow users to directly express their beliefs. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, risk aversion, and market efficiency. It's valuable to compare both to gain a comprehensive understanding of expectations for this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the collective expectation. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the market's assessment of the likelihood of each competitor winning the match, and traders can capitalize on perceived mispricings by taking opposing positions. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand on Polymarket.
