Typically, prediction market odds reflect a broader range of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, varying levels of expertise among traders, and the incentive structure of each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering a more accurate forecast.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust, reflecting the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market's efficiency depends on the number of participants and the quality of information they possess.
