Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin, while this market allows participants to directly assess probabilities. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, it will be interesting to see if this market shows a similar consensus, or if traders perceive value in an alternative outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades are rewarded.
