Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information sources and incentives. Sportsbooks typically set odds to ensure profitability, incorporating a margin, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the likelihood of each outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may emerge, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. It's common to see this market align with sportsbook odds as more information becomes available and the event draws nearer.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment of the match’s potential result. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated and responsive to changes in perceived likelihood.
