Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows individuals to express their beliefs, and the odds adjust based on collective wagers. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, the prediction market odds will likely move in the opposite direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a large amount of trading occurs.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing each possible outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price fluctuates, reflecting changing beliefs and new information. The market's efficiency depends on the volume of trading and the diversity of opinions represented among the traders.
