Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. If a significant difference exists between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds, it may present an opportunity for arbitrage, where traders can profit by exploiting the price difference. It's important to note that this market represents a distinct view based on its participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand, providing a real-time assessment of expectations for the Olivieri vs Aboian match. This creates a fluid and responsive pricing system driven by the collective intelligence of the traders.
