Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market is driven purely by what traders believe will happen. If sportsbook odds align with the prediction market, it suggests broad agreement on the likely outcome. However, discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or the influence of large bettors. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, especially regarding nuanced event details.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform’s design incentivizes accurate predictions, as traders who correctly forecast the result profit from their positions. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
