Frequently asked questions

Generally, prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from sportsbook odds due to varying information and incentives. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market is driven by traders directly betting on the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both venues. However, it’s important to remember that prediction markets are forward-looking, incorporating expectations about future events, while sportsbook odds are often set based on past performance and public perception.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd and adjusts in real-time as new information becomes available.
