Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than traditional polls or analyst predictions, as participants have 'skin in the game'. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. The current market reflects the aggregated opinions of those trading on Polymarket.
