Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, this market may move in a different direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts regarding the Tsitsipas vs. Shelton match. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage or value betting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each exact score. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment of the match's potential results. The market’s efficiency depends on the number of participants and the information they bring to bear on their trading decisions. Volume and open interest are key indicators of market activity.
