It's common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, being driven by user predictions, may reflect a more collective assessment of probabilities, potentially identifying discrepancies where the 'wisdom of the crowd' differs from expert analysis. Polls and analysts’ predictions are often used to compare against the market's implied probabilities, but these are separate sources of information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price fluctuates based on supply and demand – if more people believe Gadamauri will win, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the traders on Polymarket.
