Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, allows individuals to express their beliefs, and the resulting prices can sometimes be more accurate, especially when new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or biases present in each system. It’s useful to compare the implied probabilities to those offered by sportsbooks to assess where the market finds value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. For example, a share priced at 60 means there’s a 60% implied probability of that outcome being correct, according to the traders on Polymarket. The market’s price is entirely determined by supply and demand among traders.
