Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there's significant public information or a strong consensus forming. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than sportsbook odds, particularly when there's a large amount of volume traded. However, sportsbook odds are readily available and provide a useful benchmark for comparison.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all traders participating. The current price represents the market's best estimate of the likelihood of each outcome.
