Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when public opinion strongly diverges from the sportsbook’s initial assessment. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage or indicate where the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. Examining both sets of odds can provide a more comprehensive view of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, providing a dynamic assessment of the event’s potential results. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to $1, with higher prices indicating a greater perceived chance of success.
