Frequently asked questions

Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. If sportsbook odds initially favor one competitor, we might see the prediction market odds adjust based on new information or differing opinions. However, as the event approaches, these odds tend to converge as more information becomes available and the market incorporates a broader range of perspectives. It’s common to find discrepancies, especially early on.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the market price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, indicating increased confidence in that result. The current price reflects the aggregated expectations of all traders on Polymarket.
