Frequently asked questions

Often, prediction market odds, like those for this market, offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to reflect the true probability as assessed by traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on statistical models, this market's odds are driven by the collective wisdom and insights of participants actively trading on Polymarket. It's a fascinating comparison to observe.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in whether York City FC or Port Vale FC will score first. As more shares are purchased for one outcome, its price increases, and the price of the other outcome decreases. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood, based on the information available to traders.

This market resolves around Oct 24, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The team that is officially recorded as scoring the first goal in the York City vs. Port Vale match will determine the winning outcome. Resolution will be based on official match data and sources, ensuring a transparent and verifiable result. The platform will then distribute payouts to those who correctly predicted the first team to score, based on the final share prices at the time of resolution.

Several factors could influence the odds for this market. Any news regarding key player injuries or suspensions for either York City FC or Port Vale FC would likely cause a shift in probabilities. Changes in team form, recent match results, or tactical adjustments announced by the managers could also impact trading activity. Unexpected weather conditions on match day, or even pre-match analysis from respected sports commentators, could sway market sentiment. Ultimately, any information that alters perceptions of each team's chances of scoring first has the potential to move this market.
